About Me
Born & raised in New York City, I have moved around a bit, including upstate New York (Potsdam); Champaign, Illinois; Berlin, Germany; Nashville, Tennessee; and now in Cottondale, Alabama.
Professionally, I am a Professor of Economics and Finance at the University of Alabama, as well as the holder of the Frank Park Samford Chair of Insurance. I also am an Adjunct Professor of Finance at the University of Konstanz.
In addition, I am a Research Fellow at the Center of Finance and Econometrics and at CESifo.
I also have affiliations as a research associate with the Munich Risk & Insurance Center and with the Insitute for Insurance Economics at the University of St. Gallen.
When not at work, I am usually with my son doing some kind of sports. In addition, I am a big fan of foods and wines, having received a title of "Commandeur d'Honneur" in the Wine Society of the Medoc & Graves (Bordeaux).
And, I am a fan of Formula 1 auto racing and of fast cars in general. (Did I mention that I was a graduate of the Porsche - Skip Barber racing school?)
In addition, until recently I was on the Board of Directors for the "Friends of Hurricane Creek," a grassroots organization protecting one of the most beautiful natural resources in the state of Alabama.
In 2009, I suddenly became very ill. Thank you to everyone who sent me good wishes during that difficult time.
